A People Fully Alive

Restored, Resourced, Released

Isaiah 61:1-3; John 10:10

25th Aug 2024

We welcome you to our Service where we gather together not as those who have our lives perfectly sussed out, but as fellow pilgrims on a journey. We meet to acknowledge God’s power through the Holy Spirit in our lives, to celebrate and to affirm that we are not our own  – we belong to God and belong to one another because of the redeeming work of  Jesus Christ.

Local mission has been on my mind a lot lately, as I consider what exactly do we mean by this and what is God calling us as individuals and as a church community to do to reach out in our local community.

In Matthew 25:31-46 we read of the sheep and the goats, the separation of those who cared for the least of these, and those who did not. One take away I have always got from this is that clearly Christ desires of us that we care for and show hospitality for the least of these. Now this passage may be related to the care and hospitality of our fellow church family, as it says whatever you do for the least of these my brothers… But, we as Christians are also called to go to all the nations and make disciples. (Matthew 28:18-20)

In my mind as we consider local mission, we must consider what we do that supports and uplifts our community of believers, as well as what we must do not just among nations far from our own but among our own local community of Musselburgh which is made up of all nations.

We are called to make disciples and that implies an ongoing task set before us, one that will not end in our lifetime, one that is not limited to those already in our church community but those waiting unknowingly perhaps, to become part of our community, they are our brothers and sisters, our neighbours.

‘Whatever you have done for the least of these you have done for me.’

As we look at our calling to local mission, what is it that God requires of us with what we have available. What do we need to ask of God to provide for us so that we can do his will? We are small, we know we have limited resources, but what needs are out there in our direct church community and our wider community of Musselburgh/ South Dunedin etc that we can be a part of meeting. How can we learn to relate to, and enrich the lives of those around us?  How do we make God the main character of all we do so that those people see Him through our care?

Has God put something on your mind? We’d love to talk to plan to dream, and to put in action what God would have MBC doing in this place.  Jo Knowles

Musselburgh Music needs you!: Musselburgh music has been running at MBC for over 16 years. In that time we’ve partnered with DCBC and other volunteers from other churches to run this fun outreach to the community. Over the last year a number of our volunteers have moved on to new things and we need your help. Whether it’s some admin support, welcoming mums and children, running our powerpoint, helping run the session itself or in the kitchen. If you have 2 hours every Monday morning or even every fortnight, we would love to hear from you! Come along and help us keep this long term ministry of MBC going! Speak with Jo or email her at jknowles@mbc.ac.nz for more details.

Tasty mission meal and special guest storyteller. Chris and Sandra Jolt, and family, spent 20 years with OMF in South East Asia, including a decade in South Thailand. On Wednesday, September 4, 6.30pm – 8.30pm, Chris is offering to cook us all a Thai meal and share some stories from their time overseas. This is an event for the whole of our church, but feel free to also invite a friend who has an interest in mission. It’s $5pp to cover the meal cost (but let us know if that’s a problem, because we don’t want anyone to miss out). Chris has a PhD in anthropology, is a great communicator and is an infectious follower of Jesus. We’ll need to know numbers by Sunday, August 31. Put it in your diary now!

Opportunity to get involved: Do you love hanging out with kids? See the significance and privilege of walking with the youngest in our congregation? We would love to hear from you! We really need some more people to help in our kids ministry. If you are interested please contact Fiona Elder 021 205 4789

Kids Ministry @ MBC

Your kids are very welcome at MBC! We have a space at the back where younger children can come and sit on a rug and cushions and draw and play. We also have a pretty cool creche out past the kitchen where you can take your little ones (preschool) to play.  The Year 1-5 program welcomes pre-schoolers but a parent or older sibling may need to be present to help. In this age group we share morning tea, have a bible story, craft and games.
